November/December 2015

First off, Happy New Year from PROELIA Defense and Arrest Tactics!  We hope this year will be a successful and safe year for all.  As we move into the new year please remember to remain vigilant and sharp with your skills.

There were a few criminal cases that we provided expert witness testimony for the prosecution and lots of case review work to be done.

The Use of Force Supervisor Liability Prevention course was taught a couple times in different locations and more are scheduled. This class is becoming wildly popular and in high demand.  Indeed, some agencies are including this course as a “required” class for their supervisory personnel. The feedback we are receiving includes such statements as this course is the most  informative Use of Force class that they have ever attended and that compared to other 8-hour courses, “We learned more in the first couple hours than we learned in the entire day of the other class.”

Ed published another article on PoliceOne.com, look for more coming soon.

October 2015

October was full of case reviews, depositions and trial testimony.

We conducted a couple days of law enforcement training with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District Rangers this month.

We have a few “Use of Force: Supervisor Liability Prevention” courses coming up in the next few months.  The November and December class are currently full to capacity and the January class is filling fast.  This is a California POST Plan 4 approved course that has received outstanding ratings from past attendees.  It is not a standard PowerPoint only lecture course.  This course is taught by true practitioners with many years of supervisory field experience plus valuable expert witness experience.  If you are interested in hosting this course at your agency, please let us know.

September 2015

Ed was invited to be involved with the StreetCred® Police Killings in Context (PKIC) database peer review group.  This database will look into the real issues and circumstances when an officer used deadly force on a subject that was unarmed.  Please note the “unarmed” does not equate to “not dangerous” as you will see in the upcoming results.

John attended the California POST Learning Domain 20 (Use of Force) workbook revision committee.  John contributed in-person assistance in the entire process of making the workbook even better than it was.  Ed contributed remotely with some written suggestions that were adopted by the committee. Just another example of PROELIA Defense and Arrest Tactics helping to lead the way in use of force training!

Ed assisted the San Jose PD Academy for their impact suit testing and evaluation at SJPD Academy.  These scenarios test the recruit’s ability to know when it is reasonable to use force and how much force is reasonable to use.

We have a new website design thanks to Sebastian at The WordPress Wiz.

August 2015

We announced the next Law Enforcement Candidate Workshop at West Valley College for Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015.  The workshop will start at 0800 and will run until approx. 1700.  The cost is FREE! If you are interested or know someone that is interested in a career in law enforcement, let us know and we will get the workshop information to you.

July 2015

July was a busy month at PROELIA. We conducted baton training with the Midpenninsula Open Space Rangers and taught the (California POST Plan 4 Approved) Use of Force Supervisor Course in Santa Rosa and Monterey County. Both classes were sold out and the feedback was very positive.

Ed testified on behalf of the defense (officers were defendants) in Federal Court in Los Angeles on an OIS. The jury returned a defense verdict in favor of the officers.

June 2015

Another great training day with the Monterey County Park Rangers in June. Great compliments from the attendees about the simplicity and effectiveness of the tactics compared to previous systems they had training from. Is your agency ready to explore some “Reasonable, Reliable and Realistic” training that truly translates to the real world?

May 2015

In May we trained with the Santa Cruz/Seaside Security Corporation. We trained the new security officers in baton and OC spray. Good luck to the new officers and their new assignment.

We also spent a day with the armed officers training specifically in weapon retention, weapon take-aways, prone control handcuffing and building search techniques.

April 2015

Last month we trained with the Monterey County Park Rangers in some simple defensive tactics. The feedback from the class was overwhelmingly positive and many commented on how much more effective (yet easier to remember and apply) the techniques were in comparison to what they had previous been shown. All in all, the training resonated loud and clear with them!

We also did our very first Law Enforcement Candidate Workshop hosted be West Valley College. I must admit that I was a little apprehensive putting this project together at first since I have never done anything like it but the results were amazing. We had a great group of folks (probably 30) that were all interested in a law enforcement career. The feedback was resoundingly positive. Some of the attendees reported that they have been to other workshops but ours was the most comprehensive and useful by far. Thank you to the attendees that participated and we wish you the best of luck in getting hired. Thank you to the facilitators that helped yesterday, the day was a success largely in part of your participation!
If you are interested in attending the next one. it will be April 17th!

January 2015

Happy New Year!  We want to thank all of our clients and client agencies for allowing us to help make you 2014 safe and successful.

The Law Enforcement Use of Force: Urban Myths v Realities Workshop made the papers!  It was featured in the San Jose Mercury News and we have been receiving many positive comments and requests to repeat the workshop.

Interested in a career in law enforcement? We will be conducting some Law Enforcement Candidate Workshops in the near future in conjunction with West Valley College. These workshops will help to prepare the candidate for the testing (written, oral and physical agility) and hiring process. Let us know if you are interested as we are still determining which days to run the workshops.

This month, Ed received is Bureau of Security and Investigative Services Baton Instructor Certification.  Now we are able to train and certify security officers within the State of California to carry a baton/impact weapon.

November 2014

We have been fairly busy over the past months.  The expert witness cases continue to come in at a good rate and the word is getting out about the high quality case analysis we provide.

We continue to work with and train the Midpeninsula Open Space Rangers and have now picked up the Monterey County Park Rangers as a client.  Another new client is the Santa Cruz/Seaside Security Corp (Santa Cruz Boardwalk Security).

The Use of Force: Supervisor Liability Prevention Course is getting more and more popular.  We had over 90 people contact us to sign of for our November 2014 class so several had to go on the waitlist and/or moved to the February class.  If you are interested in attending this course please contact Ed or John to find out the next dates.  If your agency is interested in hosting this training, let us know.

This month we wrapped up our Law Enforcement Use of Force: Urban Myths v Reality seminar series in conjunction with West Valley College. This class was offered free of charge to the public to learn about the realities of law enforcement use of force with the class concluding at the San Jose Police Department Force Options Simulator.  The participants had the opportunity to participate in scenarios and “test” their skills in the simulator. The participants reported that they learned a lot over the course of the seminar but being able to actually participate in a law enforcement simulator gave them a true appreciation for what officers face in these situations.  A local media reporter attended all three sessions, we will be looking for the report and let you know.

May 2014

It has been too long for updates but we have been pretty busy.  We are continuing to present the Use of Force Supervisor Liability Prevention Course, if you are interested we have the next course scheduled for July 28, 2014 in San Mateo County…please contact Ed or John for more details.

Ed will be working with West Valley College in Saratoga (CA) to put on a Saturday series of short seminars titled, “Law Enforcement Use of Force: Urban Myths v. Reality.”  This course will be targeted for law enforcement professionals, students of criminal justice and media personnel to understand the realities of a force response.  Stay tuned or contact Ed for more details

Ed was recently retained on 3 law enforcement defense cases in the Los Angeles area in which excessive force was alleged.  One case settled favorably right after the expert report was submitted and another case just returned a defense verdict.

It has been a few months since I have been able to update the page.  Here are some of the new things that have been going on since the last update.
